    Description

SAE Mark XXXIb 31b Power Amplifier
James Bongiorno designed the SAE Mark 31b in the late 1970’s. His amplifiers and preamplifiers for SAE, GAS, and Sumo are renown for the originality of their design, circuit layout and audio quality. The SAE Mark 31b´s circuits were the base for many of those amps.
Made in USA with solid components and high build quality, the 31b delivers 50 + 50 watts RMS into 8 ohms. Damping factor is 150, Signal to noise ratio is more than 100 db.
Comparable in performance to: McIntosh MC250 (50/50 RMS); Marantz Model 15 (60/60 RMS); Harman Kardon Citation 12 (60/60 RMS).
    Specs:
RMS (minimum) per channel, 10Hz – 30kHz both channels driven:  50 Watts at 8 ohms
    Total harmonic distortion: 0.1% max.
    Intermodulation distortion: 0.05% max.
Frequency response at 1 Watt: 1Hz to 100kHz plus or minus 1dB
    Signal to noise: 100dB min.
Stability: Unconditionally with any load or no load
    Damping factor: 150 min (100Hz)
    Overload protection: Yes
    Recent maintenance, In 2019 :

Recapped — replaced the old caps in power supply and audio circuits; replaced the old caps on the driver board

Replaced a resistor and a transistor in the right channel, reset the bias

Replaced parts in the special bias regulator IC

    Cleaned and tightened hardware
    My history with this amp:
I bought the amp used in 2010. I loved it the minute I heard it; it replaced a Marantz 1060. In 2019 I thought it was time to have some maintenance done so I sent it in to one of the members of the SAE Talk group (Yahoo). When I got it back and plugged it in I was stunned. Wow, what a difference a good tune up by a good tech made. I guess maintenance once every 42 years is to be expected. At that rate next maintenance would be in 2061.
    Why Selling:
I hate to let go of this amp. I had it in a system driving a pair of Paradigm Atoms and a big old passive Paradigm subwoofer. Not to be hyperbolic but it sounded better than systems that were five times (and more) the price. Tight bass, smooth highs, full mid frequencies and a sound stage that was so three dimensional the speakers disappeared. But I have moved to a smaller house and have had to reconfigure.
